2009 Army 10-Miler and Bataan Memorial Marathon

Each year the CBAA provides monetary donations to support the ROTC cadet teams that are participating in the Army 10-Miler and the Bataan Memorial Death March Marathon.  Historically the UW teams place very high, and this year was no exception.  The races, CBAA support, and final results are summarized below.

10-Miler

The race was held in Washington DC on 5 October 2008.  The UW ROTC team placed 5th out of fifty ROTC teams that competed.  Their overall time was 4:25:22.  The winning team from Virginia Technical University had an incredible time of 4:14:21.  The team was comprised of Casey Dschaak of Belle Fourche, SD; Geoffrey Dean of Colorado Springs, CO; Devin Osburn of Woodlake, NE; Dustin Wambach of Guernsey; Benjamin Nemec of Seabrook, TX; and Mark Ver Burg of Moorcroft.

Other members of the Cowboy Battalion that participated in the event were Christopher Kaiser of Avon, IN; Eli Varney of Worland; Scot Fletcher of Fort Collins, CO; Riley Emter of Sheridan; Michael Fernandez of Wray, CO and LTC Reinhardt.

The motto of the UW 10-Miler team is "Oxygen is a Crutch" and the team showed those lowlanders that living at 7200 feet has its benefits.  The CBAA provided $400 to the team to support their attendance.  Please plan now to donate to support the UW team at next years event, which will be held 4 October 2009.

Bataan Memorial Death March

This race was held at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico on 29 March 2009.   The team was comprised of Cadets Logan Dannemiller (Cody), Dustin Wambach (Guernsey), Geoffrey Dean (Colorado Springs, CO), Casey Dschaak (Belle Fourche, SD), and Ben Nemec (Seabrook, TX).  The team placed first in their division - the ROTC Heavy Team.  Their time to complete the arduous 26.2 mile event was 6 hours, 13 minutes, and 21 seconds.

Individually Cadets Rowdy Fitchner (Burns), Katie Cranmer (Bedford, NH), and Luke Meyer (Cheyenne) placed first in their individual classes.  Fitchner placed in the under 19 male, Cranmer in the under 19 female, and Meyer in the heavy ROTC class. All results for this race can be viewed here.

Other members of the Cowboy Battalion that attended and supported the race were Christopher Kaiser (Avon, IN), Zebulun Coulter (Laramie), Levi Coulter (Laramie), Abner Gonzalez (Killeen, TX), Nicole Stamper (Hudson, FL), and Cheyenne Walsh (Chugiak, AK).

The CBAA provide $750 to support these cadets in the costs of the trip.  The cadets held other fund raisers throughout the school year to raise the necessary funds to travel and compete.  Please consider donating directly to support this event that UW ROTC has dominated for the past few years.

The next race is 21 March 2010 and UW ROTC will be fielding a team.  Please pledge your support to this event honoring those members of the "Greatest Generation" that endured and survived the Bataan Death March during WWII.
