FROM THE DESK OF THE PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SCIENCE:

With fall semester the Cowboy Battalion finds itself in the midst of many exciting activities, many of which have been sponsored by your Cowboy Battalion Alumni Association.  Thanks to the CBAA for sponsoring our 4th annual Medicine Bow Challenge and our Army Ten Miler team.  We would like to give special thanks to Life Member General Schoomaker and his wife Cindy for sponsoring our Army Ten Miler team which is headed to Washington D.C.

Despite not having their daughter Lara (see newest CBAA member) on the team, the Schoomaker’s were gracious enough to again host the UW team.

We need your continued support in helping us spread the word about the CBAA.  This is a great opportunity to remain in contact with your classmates and former cadre, but more importantly, serve as a source of information or a mentor for current and potential cadets.

COMMISSIONING CEREMONY:

The Cowboy Battalion will co-host the December Commissioning Ceremony with the Air Force ROTC.  We intend to commission four cadets into the U.S. Army, (Cadets Tim Souza, Stacey Gates, Zach Busenbark and Matthew Taylor).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN RANGER CHALLENGE:

The University of Wyoming will defend its championship at the Rocky Mountain Ranger Challenge Competition on October 14th and 15th.  Team Captain, Cadet Jeremy Chuhralya is prepping the team by conducting a rigorous PT program, ruck marches, and event driven practices.

MEDICINE BOW CHALLENGE:

The fourth annual Medicine Bow Challenge was held on Friday September 1st, with the Cowboy Battalion again ascending Medicine Bow Peak (12,013 ft).  After the hike in the beautiful Snowy Range , hungry Cadets enjoyed burgers, chips, cookies, water & Gatorade, compliments of the Cowboy Battalion Alumni Association.

A special thanks to CBAA treasurer, former UW ROTC ROO, MAJ D.C. Faber who served as our combat lifesaver, and also COL Harmsen, another former UW ROO, who also conquered the mountain with us.

MILITARY BALL:

The Cowboy Battalion and the USAF ROTC are again joining forces to sponsor the upcoming Military Ball on 17 Nov 2006 at the Wyoming Hill-Crane Dining Room.  All CBAA members are invited - If you would like to attend please call me.  The cost is $25 per person.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION GIFTS:

Cowboy Battalion Alumni Association hats are available for our lifetime members.  If you are not a lifetime association member, or if you would like to order additional hats, please contact the CBAA.  At a future date the website will have information on purchasing merchandise.

CONTACTS AND BIOGRAPHIES:

Please update us with your current information – email, how to contact you, etc – we also want to be reminded what year, branch and assignments you have had since your UW days.  In addition to sharing your experiences with your fellow alumni, you can provide current and potential cadets important and relevant information about your branch.  Please provide your biography information for inclusion into the webpage.  This can be accomplished either through the Alumni Bios link on the CBAA website (www.uwcbaa.org) or by emailing a biography to harry.whitlock@us.army.mil.  Photos may be submitted as well.

UPCOMING EVENTS

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION MEETING:

Every month the CBAA meets the first Wednesday at 0700 at the Village Inn on Grand Ave.   Please note that the 4 October meeting will be at the WY ARNG HQ in Cheyenne .  All are welcome.  We are planning a December Annual meeting.  If interested in serving or have ideas, please contact me at 307-766-3377.

BRONZE BOOT RUN:

On Saturday, October 21st Cadets will participate in the traditional Bronze Boot Run.  Cadets run the game ball from the Colorado Border to War Memorial Stadium.  Mountain West Television Network will be on hand to nationally televise the border hand off.  The Cowboy Battalion is planning a battalion run into the stadium.

ARMY 10-MILER:

The Cowboy Battalion is sending six cadets to Washington D.C., where they will race in the annual Army 10 Miler sponsored by the Association of the United States Army.  This will be UW ROTC’s third appearance in the race.  The team is training hard, running long before dawn, and participating in extra fund raising events.  Most of them are also on the Ranger Challenge Team.  The Cowboy Battalion Alumni Association is providing financial assistance to help cover the cost of the team uniforms, but our Cadets are still in need of sponsors to help with additional expenses (plane tickets, food etc).  If you would like to make a donation, contact Team Captain Cadet Jeremy Chuhralya at 307-214-4641 or chalupaj@uwyo.edu.  Thanks to Life Member and Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army, General Pete Schoomaker, the Cadets will have a roof over their heads at Quarters #1 Fort Meyer, Virginia again.
